Keep or Replace Your Car Calculator

A repair bill can make replacing a car feel obvious, while a low finance payment can make replacement feel cheaper than it is. The useful comparison is the multi-year net cost of each route.

How this calculator works

The keep scenario combines running costs, expected repairs and depreciation. The replacement scenario models finance payments, running costs and equity remaining in the replacement car after the selected horizon.

How to use it

  1. Choose a comparison horizon.
  2. Enter current-car value, expected future value and realistic running/repair costs.
  3. Enter replacement price, deposit, APR and term.
  4. Add replacement running costs and future resale value.
  5. Run a pessimistic repair scenario and a pessimistic resale scenario before deciding.

Assumptions and limitations

Repairs and resale values are uncertain. The calculation cannot value reliability, safety, warranty, convenience or the cost of unexpected downtime.
