How this calculator works

The calculator starts with gross employment income, adjusts for the pension method and salary sacrifice you select, applies the relevant Income Tax bands, estimates employee National Insurance and then applies any selected student-loan repayment.

It is a planning estimate rather than payroll software, so bonuses, irregular pay periods, benefits in kind, unusual tax codes and other payroll adjustments can create differences.

How to use it

  1. Enter your annual salary and any expected bonus.
  2. Select your tax region and enter your tax code if you use a standard numeric code such as 1257L.
  3. Add pension contributions, the pension method and any other salary sacrifice.
  4. Select your student-loan plan if applicable.
  5. Review the annual and monthly take-home estimate and the deduction breakdown.

Assumptions and limitations

Designed for employees rather than self-employed income. NI is annualised from current employee thresholds for an even-pay estimate. Relief-at-source pensions are simplified. Scottish Income Tax is applied using the selected Scottish bands. Always check an actual payslip or HMRC information for payroll-grade accuracy.
